Who is impacted?

Only certain government and diplomatic visa holders will be exempt from the additional fees.

Additionally, the amount of $250 fee will be adjusted annually for inflation. If you apply in the year 2027 or later, you will likely have to pay more than $250 in 2026.

Why is This Happening?

The reason given for raising fees is improving compliance and reducing visa overstay. The US government is saying they are doing this to ensure visa holders are accountable. While potentially also covering their administrative costs. However, for applicants – especially from lower or middle-income countries – the situation appears as a significant cost increase with little benefit.

For families and students already budgeting for flights, tuition, or accommodation. This increase may be the reason they cannot apply.

Reasons to File Before the Deadlines

The good news is that all visa applications approved before January 1, 2026. They are allowed to file without the new $250 fee.

It means that there is some opportunity to apply under the current fee structure, if you act quickly.

Visa interview appointments can book out months in advance. So it is best to begin the application process as soon as possible. This will include completing the DS-160, paying whatever fees apply, and getting the interview date before the end of 2025.

This is especially important for students starting for Fall 2026. Travelers planning anything for next year’s holidays, and workers flying for future job opportunities. By delaying your application until next year, you could end up spending hundreds of dollars more. Money you might have wanted to use for travel, lodging or the activities.
